He finished 11th ahead of the recovering Carlos Sainz, who struggled to make progress in the final stint on the hard tire, finishing 12th.
Valtteri Bottas had a difficult race, starting last after a power unit issue in qualifying and making little progress through the field to finish 13th, just ahead of Mick Schumacher in 14th.
Sebastian Vettel retired from the race after a collision with Antonio Giovinazzi on the first lap, damaging his car beyond repair.
“It was a tough race,” said Vettel. “I felt like I had a good start, but then I got hit from behind, and that was it. We’ll regroup and come back stronger in the next race.”
The result means Piastri now sits just three points behind Norris in the championship standings, with Russell a further 10 points behind in third.
The next race on the calendar is the Australian Grand Prix in two weeks’ time, where Piastri will look to continue his momentum and potentially take the championship lead.
