Mauro Bergoglio, nephew of the late Pope Francis, managed to fulfill his wish to travel to Rome to bid farewell to his uncle thanks to the generosity of a travel agency, after his financial situation became public in a television interview.
Until Tuesday morning, the inability to afford the trip kept him in Argentina, where he fondly remembered the “humility” and “humor” characteristic of Jorge Bergoglio, known as ‘Padre Jorge’ during his work in the popular neighborhoods.
The turning point was an interview with journalist Luis Novaresio on A24. The owners of a travel agency, moved by the situation, offered to donate the tickets, allowing him to attend the ceremony at the Vatican.
Visibly affected, Mauro expressed the “strong and unexpected blow” that the death of his uncle represented, especially after his recent recovery from bilateral pneumonia after 38 days of hospitalization.
In his statements to the program ‘Buen día A24’, Mauro shared that communication with the Pope, after his election, was mainly by email, maintaining a “closeness” despite the distance and the busy schedule of the pontiff.
However, the lack of economic resources prevented the family from traveling. “We can’t. I’m trying to go, to see if I can travel…,” Mauro had expressed, who had also shared his situation on another program on the same channel, even leaving an alias to receive donations.
The repercussions of his television appearances led Corima Tours, a travel agency in Buenos Aires, to decide to donate two tickets.
In this way, Mauro was able to fulfill his long-awaited trip to bid farewell to his uncle Jorge, with whom he shared memorable moments during his childhood.
